Why your Discord banner matters
Discord has over 150 million monthly active users across 19 million active servers. The server banner (visible at the top of your server channel list) is one of the first things new members see. Server listing directories like Disboard and Top.gg collectively receive millions of monthly searches from people looking for new communities to join.

Discord banner best practices
Tested principles for creatives that perform.
- Design for Discord's dark interface. Discord's default theme is dark. Banners with dark backgrounds (deep navy, charcoal, dark purple) integrate naturally - light banners can look jarring against the sidebar.
- Match your server's colour identity. Most Discord servers use a specific accent colour in their roles, channels, and emojis. Pull that accent into your banner to create a coherent visual experience for members.
- The server icon must work at 32 px. Your server icon appears in the sidebar at a very small size. Favour simple, bold shapes over intricate illustrations. A letter, symbol, or single-object icon is more recognisable than a complex scene.
- Reserve the lower portion for system overlays. Discord renders your server name and member count over the bottom portion of the banner in some views. Design with the bottom quarter as 'safe to overlay'.
- Use Cinematic or Illustration for gaming, Flat Design for study/work servers. Match the visual style to the community type - a minimalist Flat design reads as professional, while Cinematic conveys drama and energy.
- Check requirements before designing. A server banner requires Level 2 Boost (7 boosts). An invite splash needs Level 1 (2 boosts). Confirm your server's boost level before investing time in a banner.
